Sowore Arrested Over Alleged Criminal Offences – Police Deny Torture Claims

The Nigeria Police Force has clarified the circumstances surrounding the recent arrest of activist Omoyele Sowore, stating that his detention was lawful and based on credible allegations, including forgery and cyberstalking.

In a statement issued by the Force Public Relations Officer, DCP Olumuyiwa Adejobi, the police dismissed claims of torture or inhumane treatment, describing such reports as false and deliberately misleading. The Force said Sowore was granted bail within the constitutionally required 48-hour period and was fully informed of the charges against him. He is expected to appear in court soon.

The police also addressed the viral image showing Sowore with a bandaged arm, clarifying that the bandage was part of his belongings prior to detention. An internal inquiry has been ordered to investigate how he accessed it while in custody, especially after declining two independent medical assessments offered on August 7 and 8 by police medical teams.

The statement reaffirmed the police’s adherence to due process, human rights standards, and the Anti-Torture Act. It emphasized that Sowore’s detention was sanctioned by a court order and that no individual is above the law.

The Force urged the media and public to avoid sensationalism and report responsibly, assuring that further updates would be provided as investigations continue.
