ABIA STATE POLICE COMMAND DEEPENS TIES WITH JUDICIARY TO STRENGTHEN JUSTICE DELIVERY

In a strategic move to enhance justice delivery and intensify the fight against crime, the Abia State Police Command, under the leadership of Commissioner of Police, CP Danladi Isa, paid a courtesy visit to the Chief Judge of Abia State, Hon. Justice Lilian Abai, in Umuahia.

The visit, which included senior officers such as the Deputy Commissioner of the State Criminal Investigation Department (SCID) and the Officer-in-Charge of Legal Services, was aimed at fostering stronger collaboration between the police and the judiciary. CP Isa emphasized that such synergy is critical to maintaining law and order in the state.

During the engagement, CP Isa highlighted several challenges facing the justice system, including rising violent crimes, jurisdictional complexities, and delays in the handling of overnight cases—factors that often lead to prolonged detention of suspects. He advocated for expedited judicial processes to uphold the rights of suspects and ensure timely prosecution.

He also expressed concern about the handling of juvenile offenders and called for the establishment of Borstal homes in Abia State. Additionally, he urged for more frequent sittings of juvenile courts, particularly for cases involving sexual abuse of minors, stressing the need for urgent reforms to safeguard vulnerable groups and ensure swift justice.

In her response, Hon. Justice Lilian Abai welcomed the delegation and commended the Police Command’s dedication to justice and inter-agency collaboration. She reaffirmed the judiciary’s willingness to strengthen cooperation with the police in addressing these challenges.

Justice Abai recommended improved coordination between Divisional Police Officers, Area Commanders, and magistrates, in line with the provisions of the Administration of Criminal Justice laws—particularly the requirement for access to police detention facilities. She also called for the deployment of court duty officers to the High Court to bolster security and enhance court operations.

The meeting concluded with a renewed commitment from both institutions to deepen their partnership in promoting security, protecting human rights, and advancing efficient justice delivery throughout Abia State.
