Building Bridges: Abia Police Command Engages Officers on Community Relations

The Abia State Police Command has intensified efforts to strengthen police-community relations through the Phase II implementation of the Mutual Accountability and Community Scorecard (MACS) Initiative.

At an engagement session held on Tuesday at the Command Officers’ Mess, Umuahia, key police officers serving under the Umuahia North axis convened to deliberate on strategies for enhancing collaboration between law enforcement and residents.

The session brought together officers from the Area Command Umuahia, Central Police Station (CPS), World Bank Division, Ohuhu Division, and Mike Okiro Division. Participants represented major operational units, including Patrol and Guard, Investigation, Gender, and Traffic sections.

Facilitated by the project team led by Dr. Emeka Ononamadu, Executive Director of the Citizens Centre for Integrated Development and Social Rights (CCIDESOR), the engagement provided an interactive platform for officers to share field experiences and discuss obstacles affecting mutual trust and cooperation between the police and the communities they serve.

Dr. Ononamadu emphasized the importance of accountability and open communication in improving public safety outcomes. He noted that the MACS Initiative continues to serve as a bridge for constructive dialogue, fostering transparency, responsiveness, and shared responsibility in community policing.

The session is part of ongoing efforts to build a more inclusive and people-centered policing system in Abia State, where both the police and citizens work hand in hand to ensure peace, security, and justice.
