David Maduako –Umuahia
Abía State Ministry of Environment have expressed her displeasure over the poor outcome of the month of June 2026 sanitation exercise in Umuahia the Abia state capital .
The exercise which took place on 28th of June being the last Saturday of the month of June showed that some strategic points in the capital city of Umuahia were filthy, especially at Orie Ugba market where the entire market was littered with refuse dumps and the traders were busy buying and selling with impunity without minding that the day was for sanitation exercise.
Speaking at the end of the day’s exercise, the Hon. Commissioner Ministry of Environment Hon philemon Ogbonna Asonye represented by the Head of Department Pollution Control and Environmental Health Mrs Happiness Akpulonu said the day’s exercise was not encouraging . According to her refuse heaps littered some areas such as Orie Ugba market and the managers of the market did nothing about it . She said henceforth there will be a more strict compliance which shall be enforced on the traders to ensure the cleaninness of the capital city of Umuahia and the market are restored back .
Speaking the House Member in charge of Environmental Sanitation in Abia House of Assembly Hon Kalu Mba Nwoke said the Sanitation exercise was more or less a failure especially at the Orie Ugba market where the traders were busy doing their business under refuse heaps . He said such situation is quite unacceptable to government. He made it clear that subsequent exercises would not be Uhuru as usual saying force would be applied if only to ensure total cleaniness of the state .
