Chima Anyaso Condemns Intimidation of LP Supporters in Bende, Secures Release of Member Arrested in Igbere.
The Labour Party candidate for Bende Federal Constituency, Dr. Chimaobi Desmond Anyaso, has condemned what he described as the intimidation and harassment of Labour Party members and supporters in Bende, warning that such actions would no longer be tolerated.
Dr. Anyaso stated this on Wednesday, August 19, 2026, when he visited the Igbere Divisional Police Station following information that a Labour Party member, Mrs. Nnenna David, had been arrested by the police earlier that morning.
According to Anyaso, the arrest was allegedly ordered by an APC chieftain, Mr. Josco Joe, whom he identified as a supporter of the Deputy Speaker of the House of Representatives, Rt. Hon. Benjamin Kalu, and a chieftain of the All Progressives Congress (APC).
Speaking at the police station, Anyaso called for an end to what he described as political intimidation, stressing that the emerging political contest in Bende should be conducted within the bounds of democratic principles.
“This intimidation has to stop. The other day, they used the Army on our supporters. I want to say that no more will such be allowed,” he said.
The Labour Party candidate also said he had personally faced insults from supporters of the Deputy Speaker but had not resorted to using security agencies against his political opponents.
“I have been abused by the supporters of the Deputy Speaker. How many have I arrested? Campaign has started and people will speak for and against. The role of the Police is to maintain law and order and not to take sides,” Anyaso stated.
He further warned that any police officer found to have compromised neutrality in the discharge of their duties would be reported to the appropriate authorities.
“I will report any Police officer who refuses to be neutral going forward to the appropriate authorities for action,” he added.
Following the intervention, Mrs. Nnenna David was subsequently released by the Divisional Police Officer of the Igbere Division of the Nigeria Police Force, CSP ThankGod Census Akita.
Dr. Anyaso reiterated his call for a peaceful and issue-based political contest in Bende, urging all political actors to allow citizens to freely express their political choices without intimidation or harassment.
