ABIA STATE GOVT POSITIONING THE HEALTH SECTOR FOR GREATER IMPACT

In her bid to continue to reposition the Health Sector of the state ,the Abia state government have employed
649 medical personnels to strengthen the sector for better performance.

The Commissioner for Information, Prince Okey Kanu disclosed this on Monday the 19th day of January 2026 while briefing the press at the government house Umuahia on the outcome of this week’s State Executive Council meeting Superintended by the Governor Alex Otti.

The Commissioner said this is in line with the government’s vision towards repositioning the health sector for better performance.

Prince Kanu stated that out of the 649 newly employed workers, 432 are Nurses who have been posted to work in the state’s primary healthcare centres that are being equipped and functionalised across the state.

He said that even after the shortfall of 122 medical personnel is filled up to bring the total number to 771, the Ministry of Health would still be open to employ more medical personnel at
the state level.

Prince Kanu noted that among the newly recruited medical personnel is a neurosurgeon who had the opportunity to work in New York City but chose to come back and work in Abia state.

Prince Kanu revealed that Governor Alex Otti has been voted as the best performing Governor of the South East zone by the Forum of Academic Doctors, following the massive transformation of the state across all sectors.

Prince Okey Kanu informed that the state government have approved the construction of a housing Estate in Umuahia the state capital . He said the Estate though for medium and high cadre civil Servants, however the general public can still be part and parcel of the estate .

In line with this ,the Abia Information Boss said the state ministry of Housing would soon flag off the. Construction of a civil service commission pocket layout in Umuahia. According to him agreement is almost concluded with Developers to embark on the construction of housing Estates a cross the state to provide affordable accommodations for workers and the general public. It is going to be public private partnership PPP , arrangement , the Commissioner noted .

.The Commissioner said Abia State electricity Regulatory Authority ASERA would soon issue an order to begin the regularisation of all electrical activities in the State. This he said is in accordance with the transfer of authority from National Electricity Regulatory Commission NERC to ASERA

As statutory Regulators they would endeavour to protect the rights of the consumer and attend to the complaints of consumers and engender harmonious relationship between the Operators and the Consumer s.

Abia State government’ will soon issue an order to LandLords in the state to renovate their houses and make it look beautiful , as to beautify the cities of the state . He said Landlords whose houses are constituting nuisance and an eye sore in the city would face the wrath of government if their buildings are not renovated .the Commissioner said severe actions would be taken against erring Landlords .
