Anugwa Bows Out: Abia Honours Immigration Chief’s 35 Years of Distinguished Service

The Abia State Government, alongside prominent stakeholders, has paid glowing tribute to the retiring Assistant Comptroller General (ACG) of the Nigeria Immigration Service (NIS), Echefula Anugwa, describing his decades of service as exemplary, impactful, and worthy of emulation.

The commendations were made during a colourful pulling-out parade held at the NIS Headquarters in Umuahia, where dignitaries gathered to honour a career defined by discipline, innovation, and commitment to national development.

Speaking at the ceremony, Governor Alex Otti, represented by his Deputy, Engr. Ikechukwu Emetu, said the event symbolised more than a ceremonial exit, noting that it was a celebration of legacy, dedication, and selfless service.

He highlighted Anugwa’s inspiring journey from humble beginnings in Obingwa Local Government Area to the pinnacle of his profession as a testament to resilience and unwavering commitment to duty.

The governor described the retired ACG as a proud ambassador of Abia State whose contributions to the Nigeria Immigration Service and the nation at large would remain indelible. According to him, Anugwa’s years in service should be assessed not merely by their length, but by the depth and impact of his contributions.

He further lauded Anugwa’s academic accomplishments and commitment to continuous learning, noting that his progression from a National Certificate in Education to multiple advanced degrees, alongside ongoing doctoral studies, reflects a lifelong pursuit of excellence.

Otti also acknowledged the retired officer’s role in institutional reforms within the NIS, particularly his pioneering work in the computerisation of accounting systems, which improved salary administration, as well as his contribution to the establishment of the revenue e-payment system that enhanced transparency and operational efficiency.

In his remarks, Senator Enyinnaya Abaribe described Anugwa’s retirement as a transition into a new phase of life rather than an end, commending him for upholding integrity, professionalism, and dedication throughout his career.

He noted that the retired officer served as a worthy ambassador of Abia State.

Also speaking, the Comptroller General of the Nigeria Immigration Service, Kemi Nanna Nandap, represented by ACG A.L. Kamdare, praised Anugwa’s 35 years of meritorious service.

She highlighted his discipline, diligence, and results-driven approach, adding that his ability to combine professional excellence with academic advancement distinguished him and contributed to his rise to the rank of Assistant Comptroller General.

Similarly, the Abia State Controller of NIS, Justina Oweh, described Anugwa as a seasoned administrator whose service years were marked by visionary leadership and a strong commitment to institutional growth.

In his farewell address, Anugwa recounted his career journey, which began in March 1991 when he enlisted as a Senior Inspector after completing Basic Course 26.

He recalled postings to Cross River and Enugu states, as well as his extensive service at the NIS Headquarters in Abuja, where he spent the greater part of his career contributing to the growth of the Service.

He charged officers and men of the Service to remain steadfast in professionalism, integrity, and continuous self-improvement.

He also urged them to shun corruption and adopt a humane approach in the discharge of their duties.

The ceremony drew top government officials, senior officers of the Nigeria Immigration Service, and well-wishers, all of whom gathered to celebrate a career widely regarded as distinguished and exemplary.
