Abia Police Intensify Crackdown on Unregistered Vehicles, Tampered Number Plates

The Abia State Police Command has commenced a statewide enforcement operation against unregistered vehicles and vehicles with tampered, obscured, defaced, altered, or unlawfully covered number plates, in line with the directive of the Inspector-General of Police, Olatunji Rilwan Disu.

The exercise, according to the Command, is aimed at enhancing security and curbing criminal activities often perpetrated with the use of vehicles that cannot be easily identified or traced by law enforcement agencies.

In a statement issued on behalf of the Commissioner of Police, Abia State Command, Danladi Isa, the Police Public Relations Officer, DSP Maureen Chioma Chinaka, said the enforcement exercise is in compliance with the Inspector-General’s directive mandating the nationwide impoundment of unregistered vehicles and the prosecution of offenders.

The Commissioner of Police noted that the use of unregistered vehicles and vehicles with altered or concealed registration numbers poses significant security threats, undermines law enforcement operations, hampers effective crime detection and investigation, and provides cover for criminal elements to evade identification and arrest.

CP Isa directed all supervisory officers and personnel involved in the operation to ensure strict, coordinated, and professional enforcement of the relevant regulations. He stressed that the exercise must be conducted in accordance with the law and with due respect for the fundamental rights of citizens.

The police chief also warned officers against engaging in extortion, harassment, or any form of misconduct during the exercise, stating that any personnel found culpable would face severe disciplinary sanctions.

He urged members of the public to report cases of police misconduct through the Command’s Complaint Response Unit and advised motorists operating unregistered vehicles or using tampered or obscured number plates to immediately comply with existing regulations.

The Command further called on residents of Abia State to remain law-abiding, vigilant, and supportive of ongoing security efforts by reporting suspicious persons and activities to the nearest police station or through the Command’s emergency response lines.

According to the statement, the initiative forms part of broader efforts by the Police to strengthen public safety and enhance security across the state.
