David Maduako –Umuahia
The Honourable Commissioner for Environment in Abía State Hon. Philemon Asonye Ogbonna have declared that the state’s monthly sanitation exercise is not for the benefit of government alone , but for the good of all living on the state .
The Commissioner made this declaration while briefing the press at the High Court premises in Umuahia ,on the out come of the end of the month of September sanitation exercise which came up on the 26th of September 2026 .
The Commissioner who said he was impressed with the turn up of the residents ,said however there are some isolated cases of some people refusing to participate in the monthly clean up program and this he said is quite unacceptable to government. Hon. Asonye pointed at Orie Ugba market where the marketers refuse to partake in the sanitation program . He warned that government can no longer continue to fold it’s hand and watch some persons flagrantly disobey government orders.
He said henceforth government would carry out massive arrest of Offenders at the market and go ahead to site a sanitation Court there to try offenders .
The Commissioner regretted that despite government’s efforts to keep drainages in the state free from any encumbrance , some people still empty their refuse bin into water ways . He said this is very unfortunate, some people he said do it and go scout free because they are yet to be caught by government . “Anyone caught , would pay heavily for it” , he stated on quote He urged people to desist from this attitude so as to preserve the environment and the drainages.
He called on residents to keep away from drainages when ever it is raining noting that the erosion this year is quite threatening . He commissirated with already affected families whose loved ones were washed away by the floods, saying that government’ would soon visit to sympathize with them even as stated that plans are on top gear to control flood in the state.
