Dr. Otti Declares West Africa’s First Para-Badminton Championship Open in Abia

Abia State etched its name into the annals of global sporting history on Tuesday as Governor Dr. Alex Otti officially declared open the inaugural Abia Para-Badminton International Championship and the All-Africa Para-Badminton Championship at the International Conference Centre, Umuahia.

The twin championships the first of their kind not only in Abia but in the entire West African sub-region are sanctioned by the Badminton World Federation and held under the auspices of the Para Badminton Confederation Africa.

Over 30 countries are participating in the event, bringing together top para-badminton athletes in a powerful celebration of inclusion, resilience, and the unifying spirit of sport.

Governor Otti, represented by his Deputy, Engr. Ikechukwu Emetu, described the historic tournament as “a celebration of resilience, unity, and the unbreakable human spirit.”

“Para sports remind us of a profound truth: that ability is not limited by disability,” he said. “They challenge stereotypes, break barriers, and inspire us to dream bigger.”

He reaffirmed that inclusivity remains a core pillar of his administration’s policy direction, emphasizing that in Abia State, inclusion is not an afterthought, but a guiding principle. The Governor also lauded sponsors, partners, media organizations, and organizers for their commitment to making the event a reality.

in his opening remarks  , Abia State Commissioner for Youth and Sports Development, Sir Nwaobilor Ananaba, emphasized the significance of hosting the first international para-badminton tournament in West Africa. He described the event as a “milestone for both sports tourism and inclusive development.”

“This championship is more than a sporting event,” he said. “It is a symbol of progress, inclusion, and global recognition for Abia.”

Sir Ananaba also noted the tournament’s economic impact, citing potential boosts to hospitality, tourism, and small businesses as thousands of visitors flock to the state.

Commending Abia State for its leadership in inclusive sports, President of the Badminton Federation of Nigeria, Barr. Francis Orbih, and CEO of the Badminton Confederation of Africa, Mr. Jeff Shigoli, hailed the state’s pioneering efforts.

“Abia State has made history,” said Orbih. “Thanks to His Excellency Dr. Alex Otti, we are witnessing the first-ever international para-badminton championship in West Africa.”

The Abia Para-Badminton International Championship will run through October 5, after which attention will turn to the All-Africa Para-Badminton Championship, expected to attract even more participants from across the continent.

With its successful hosting of this landmark event, Abia State is rapidly emerging as a rising hub for adaptive sports and inclusive development, underscoring its commitment to innovation, international collaboration, and progressive governance.
