WE CAN MODERNIZE OUR CULTURE AND FARMING PRACTICE

A Sociologist and an Agronomist in Azueke Ibeku autonomous Community in Umuahia North LGA of Abia State Hon. Tony Onyenweaku has called on the Igbo race to develop their Culture by modernizing it rather than abandon it entirely.

Speaking recently in his Umuaroko Azueke Ibeku country home during the celebration of the community s New Yam festival which took place recently said it it is wrong for some sons and daughters of the land not to partake in the practice of the culture of their land especially the new yam festivities which is centered on giving thanks to God for a good harvest , saying their refusal to participate is based on their Christian religion . Hon. Onyenweaku said instead of total abstanance , some of the cultures could be modernized to suit every one . According to him most traditional rulers in Ibeku land pray to God Almighty before embarking on the celebration of the new yam festival . Culture is our way of life we should not throw it away
or leave it in the hands of traditionalists he posited .

Hon.Oyenweaku who is also the President General of Azueke Ibeku autonomous community advocated for the adoption of In _House Farming using bags to plant crops saying it is a modern way of farming ,he noted that some countries such as China practice agriculture without sand and they are successful and export farm produce . He maintained that a room of 12 by 12 meters can feed a family of 3 for a year so Agriculture for sustainable no longer require large expanse of land . Talking about the environment , the Agronomist and son of one time number one cocoa Farmer in Nigeria Chief David Onyenweaku , said all Africans need is to conquer their environment and move to nurturing their environment. Explaining further the Honourable said nature have deposited all that mankind need to take care of himself such as food , clothing , drug education , religion ,and more. in man’s environment , all that is needed is to develop the knowledge to conquer the environment by working according to seasons but when man advance to nurturing his environment , he can engage in an all year farming no more seasonal farming . This is the edge the whites have over Africans .

Hon. Onyenweaku was full of praises for the state governor Dr Alex Otti saying he is doing very well remembering how his father Chief David Onyenweaku once told governor Otti when he came to visit his father that he Otti would one day be the governor of Abia state and this have come to pass .

He called on Nigerian governent and farmers to invest in cocoa farming noting that cocoa is like a money minting machine in the international market . Government’ should also give grants to farmers , subsidise agriculture and reintroduce Agric Extension Officers for adequate food supply in the country .
