Abia State Government Announces September Sanitation Exercise

The Abia State Government has announced that the monthly environmental sanitation exercise for September will take place on Saturday, September 27, 2025, between 7:00 a.m. and 10:00 a.m. across the state.

According to an official statement authorized by the Honourable Commissioner for Environment, Mr. Philemon Asonye Ogbonna, there will be a total restriction of movement during the three-hour period. Only individuals on essential duties will be exempted and must present valid identification or official authorization when requested.

To ensure the success of the exercise, the statement calls on Local Government Chairmen, traditional rulers, town union leaders, religious heads, youth and women organizations to mobilize and educate their communities on the importance of active participation in the sanitation effort.

In preparation for the state-wide cleanup, all markets, motor parks, public and private transport companies, and business premises are to remain closed on Friday, September 26, 2025, between 7:00 a.m. and 9:00 a.m. for their own internal sanitation activities.

The Ministry of Environment also announced that refuse disposal trucks will be deployed on Saturday to evacuate all collected waste, as is customary.

Security agencies including the Nigeria Police Force, Federal Road Safety Corps, and Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps are directed to report at their usual deployment points for duty.

Residents are reminded to remain at home during the exercise, clean their surroundings, and wear nose masks while participating.

The government warns that defaulters will be arrested and prosecuted in accordance with the Abia State Basic Environmental Law.
