Imo Police Arrest Two Over Viral Okigwe Assault Video

The Imo State Police Command has arrested two suspects in connection with the assault of a young woman and her brother at Okigwe, Imo State, following a viral video of the incident on social media.

The Command, in a statement issued by its Police Public Relations Officer, DSP Okoye Henry, ANIPR, clarified that the armed men seen assaulting the victims in the video are not police officers, but personnel of the Imo State Vigilante Organization.

According to the statement, the suspects, identified as Ejiogu Nchekwube and Caleb Onyebuchi, have been arrested and are currently being detained at the Okigwe Divisional Police Headquarters, where investigation into the incident is ongoing.

The victims were reportedly travelling to Abia State University when they were allegedly accosted and assaulted by the armed men at Okigwe.

The Police Command said the clarification became necessary following the circulation of the video, which had generated public concern and could create the impression that the individuals involved were members of the Nigeria Police Force.

The Commissioner of Police, Imo State Command, CP Audu Garba Bosso, psc(+), mnips, reaffirmed the Command’s commitment to professionalism, accountability and respect for the rights of members of the public.

CP Bosso assured that any person found culpable after investigation would face appropriate action in accordance with the law.

The Command urged members of the public to remain calm and desist from circulating unverified information, advising them to rely on official channels for accurate updates on the matter.

The Police said further information would be made available to the public as the investigation progresses.
