Labour Party Screens 24 Abia Assembly Aspirants Ahead of 2027 Elections

The Abia State chapter of the Labour Party has concluded the screening exercise for aspirants seeking to contest for seats in the Abia State House of Assembly ahead of the 2027 general elections, reaffirming its commitment to due process and adherence to the party’s electoral timetable.

The screening exercise, conducted by the State Working Committee (SWC) of the party, took place in line with the official Labour Party schedule which fixed May 20, 2026, for the screening of House of Assembly aspirants across the state.

According to the party, the exercise was carried out in strict compliance with the provisions of the Electoral Act, the constitution of the Labour Party, and the approved guidelines regulating the party’s pre-election activities.

A total of 24 aspirants participated in the exercise, presenting their credentials and other required documents before the screening committee as part of efforts to ensure a transparent, credible, and fair process.

The screening attracted the presence of top party leaders and elected officials, including the Speaker of the Abia State House of Assembly, Emmanuel Emeruwa, and the Deputy Speaker, Austin Okezie Ugolee, alongside other members and leaders of the House.

The Labour Party described the exercise as peaceful, orderly, and thorough, noting that the process reflects the party’s commitment to internal democracy and the emergence of credible candidates capable of effectively representing the interests of the people.

The party further reiterated its determination to strictly comply with the approved timetable and guidelines throughout all stages of the electoral process, assuring members and supporters that activities leading to the primaries and the 2027 general elections would be conducted transparently and in accordance with the law.

Party leaders emphasized that adherence to the timetable remains essential in sustaining discipline, orderliness, and confidence among members and aspirants across the state.

The Labour Party also disclosed that the official outcome of the screening exercise would be released after the completion of all internal processes and necessary reviews.
