UMUAHIA CAPITAL DEVELOPMENT AUTHORITY TO EMBARK ON ROADS CONSTRUCTION WITHIN UMUAHIA

In a bid to hasten the beautification of Umuahia the Capital City of Abía State, the Umuahia Capital Development Authority UCDA is to embark on the construction and reconstruction of some roads within the capital city of Umuahia .

The Commissioner for Information Prince Okey Kanu revealed this on Monday the 23rd of March 2026 at the government House Umuahia while briefing News men on the out come of the week’s Executive Council Meeting..

The Commissioner also hinted that the state government have concluded plans to wage war against road accidents within the capital city of Umuahia .
According to him , government have noticed the increased rate of motor accidents within Umuahia city which he said is as a result of the good roads of the city ,drivers now drive on high speed just to enjoy the new roads, consequently they get themselves involved in road accidents.

This the Commissioner said this necessitated the decision to construct road bumps at strategic points of the roads to checkmate over speeding and avoid the untimely death of innocent Citizens through
avoidable accidents.

The commissioner hinted that the state government
has ordered for the release of funds for the completion of all on going projects accross the state .

He noted that work have already commenced on several urban beautification initiatives, including roadside tree planting, landscaping of designated public spaces, repair and painting of curbs, as well as the installation of road signs at strategic points .
Major roads for the programme include Aguiyi Ironsi Boulevard, Library Avenue, and the stretch from Shoprite through Aba Park, among others .He noted
that protective guard wires installed are meant to protect newly planted trees.

Prince Kanu further disclosed that perimeter fencing have been completed at the new Afara Relief Market ,
while compensations have equally been paid to affected persons .

On road infrastructure, Prince Okey Kanu stated that some
ongoing and proposed road projects include the construction of Umuokoro Road linking BCA Road to Ikot Ekpene Road in Ohokobe Ndume, the New Heaven Junction to Isi-Court Road in Umuahia South LGA, Uzzi Ossah Road, and the rehabilitation of Mgbarakuma Nsirimo Road.

He added that the road linking the International Conference Centre to Winners Church/ASEPA Road will also be constructed, while the Michael Okpara statue will be retrofitted.

Prince Kanu further said that the state government has expanded its development framework with the establishment of the Greater Ohafia Development Authority (GODA), complementing the existing Greater Aba Development Authority (GADA) and Umuahia Capital Development Authority (UCDA), in a bid to extend urban development to other parts of the state, especially Ohafia and its environs.

He said direct labour work is going on in 51 road project sites and
two projects have been completed, out of the 51 while three new ones have been added to the list.

He further disclosed that 29 road contract projects are currently on going across the state, with work progressing steadily due to favourable weather .

The Commissioner announced that the State Government will hold a state burial service in honour of the late Rev. Dr. Uma Ukpai, a distinguished cleric and illustrious son of the state.
