Abia Announces February 28 Sanitation Exercise, Restricts Movement

Residents of Abia State have been notified of the February edition of the state’s monthly sanitation exercise scheduled for Saturday, February 28, 2026, between 7:00 a.m. and 10:00 a.m.

The announcement was contained in a press release signed by the Honourable Commissioner for the Ministry of Environment, Mr. Philemon Asonye Ogbonna. According to the statement, movement of persons and vehicles during the exercise will be restricted, except for individuals on essential duties who must present valid identification or other authentic authorization on demand.

The Commissioner called on Executive Chairmen (Mayors) of the Local Government Councils, traditional rulers, town union leaders, religious leaders, as well as youth and women organizations across the state to monitor compliance, sensitize residents on the importance of the exercise, and actively participate.

As part of preparations, all markets, motor parks, private and public transport companies, and business premises are to remain closed on Friday, February 27, 2026, between 7:00 a.m. and 9:00 a.m. to conduct their own clean-up activities.
Security and enforcement agencies, including the Nigeria Police Force,

Federal Road Safety Corps, and Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps, have been directed to assemble at their usual take-off points for deployment.
Residents are advised to remain indoors during the exercise, clean their surroundings, and wear nose masks while carrying out sanitation activities.
The release emphasized that defaulters will be arrested and prosecuted in accordance with the Abia State Basic Environmental Law.
