The Abia State Chapter of the Labour Party have held its State Congress with Hon. Peter Azubuike emerging as the new State Chairman of the party

Others elected at the consensus Congress
Include Chucks Akanmadu ,
State Secretary, Emenike Iroegbu, Publicity Secretary, Joy Ngozi Akanwa -Treasurer, Ben Oti – Organizing Secretary, Elvis Nwagbara , Financial Secretary, Elizabeth Udo Kalu Woman Leader ,Uche Nwagbo youth Leader among others.

Speaking during the congress held at the party’s secretariat in Umuahia, on Saturday, April 25, the Abia State Governor, Dr. Alex Otti, said the congress was peaceful
saying it is a sign of a new era of unity in the party.

Gov. Otti noted that the new state party Executives would be taking off smoothly in the new party Secretariat according to him,the days of fraudulent political practices are over . He promised to support the new Executives to enable them succeed , so they should feel free to make request of those things they need to make them succeed in the on coming general elections of 2027 .

The Governor congratulated the new Executives on their emergence, and praised the Congress Organizing Committee for a job well done, and further commended the former Chairman of Labour party in the State Sir Emmanuel Nwaeze Otti for holding the Party firm during the period of National Leadership crisis.

Gov. Otti equally commended the National and State Leadership of the Party, members of the electoral committee and stakeholders for contributing to the success of the exercise.

Speaking earlier, the Chairman of the State Congress Committee and Special Adviser to the Governor on Political Matters, Hon. Acho Obioma, said that the congress followed successful ward and local government congresses held on Thursday and Friday, respectively.

Hon. Obioma, said the processes were peaceful and transparent, while aspirants emerged through consensus across positions noting that the exercise reflects the unity and internal democracy within the Labour Party.

Contributing, the State Congress Coordinator, Dr Chibuzo Okereke, said that the process complied with the relevant sections of the law, including the Constitution of Nigeria, Electoral Act and party guidelines . He noted that the congress was part of a broader democratic process leading to the party’s National convention coming up on the 28th of April 2026 .

Speaking , the newly elected Chairman of the Labour Party, in Abia State, Hon. Peter Azubuike said that his mission is to lead the party to electoral victory in every part of the State come 2027 . He promised to intensify membership drive in all parts of the state to further strengthen party structures in the state .

In a separate interview with the press , the immediate past acting state Chairman of Labour Party in Abia State, Sir , Emmanuel Nwaeze Otti congratulated the new Hon . peter Azubuike led Executives of the party for their victory. He expressed his confidence on the new Exco to deliver the expected goods stating that he is always on hand to help them in any area of need . saying am ready to assist them in any area any day any time .

Recounting some of his achievements that gladdened his heart while in office ,
Sir Ema Nwaeze Otti said he is happy that the party got an all round victory in the immediate past local government elections where Labour party clinched almost all the positions contested for. According to him , the party faired well under his administration as state chairman , the party Secretariat was retrofitted by the governor following his
appeal to the governor Dr. Àllex Otti and he has just handed over to a new Executive without any rancour unlike what transpired between him and a former Chairman of the party CeeKay Igara who found it difficult to hand over to him when he was chosen as acting party chairman. He recalled that he and his Executives took a tour round the state to strengthen the party .

Sir Otti was full of praises for the state governor Dr. Alex Otti for his numerous achievements in the state including the good edifices he is putting up in government house Umuahia, especially the new governor’s lodge.For his love for Dr.Ottis style of governance in the state , the ex Chairman Sir Otti stated his preparedness to work in any capacity for the government stating his desire to see Labour party win elections in other states of the federation. He made it clear that Labour party having only one state is not healthy to say the least .

Sir Nwaeze Otti again expressed confidence that Labour party will win the fresh legal context between the party and Dr. Abure in the Supreme Court . Abure he said have lost the battle already.
