Abia Police Inaugurates PCRC Safe Schools Initiative

The Abia State Police Command has inaugurated the Police Community Relations Committee (PCRC) Safe Schools Initiative to strengthen the security of educational institutions across the state.

The initiative was inaugurated on Wednesday, September 9, 2026, by the Commissioner of Police, Abia State Command, CP Wilfred Olutokunbo Afolabi,  during a ceremony attended by a PCRC delegation led by its Chairman, Chief Kpakpando Igboaulam.

The Safe Schools Initiative is designed to enhance security in schools through strategic collaboration, community engagement and proactive safety measures. Its responsibilities include mobilising stakeholders, promoting safety awareness, supporting school-based security, coordinating student mentorship and civic education, training safety volunteers and encouraging the deployment of modern security systems, including surveillance where necessary.

Afolabi said the Command had continued to safeguard schools through routine patrols around educational institutions, continuous monitoring across Area Commands and Divisions, and daily documentation of security activities to promote accountability and responsiveness.

The Commissioner commended the PCRC for the initiative, describing it as bold and timely, while stressing that community-driven support was critical to effective policing. He urged the committee to deepen stakeholder collaboration and ensure that the initiative produces visible safety outcomes in schools across Abia.

The Coordinator of the PCRC Safe Schools Initiative, Abia State, thanked the Commissioner for his support and leadership, assuring that the committee would justify the confidence reposed in it and work towards making the initiative a benchmark for school safety in Nigeria.

The Command reiterated its commitment to working with relevant stakeholders to ensure a safe, secure and conducive environment for students and other members of the school community across the state.
