Abia Police Train Officers to Predict, Prevent Crime Through Intelligence.

—-Afolabi Orders Regular Mapping of Crime Hotspots, Strategic Deployment of Personnel

UMUAHIA — The Abia State Police Command has concluded a specialised training programme on crime mapping, crime timing and crime nipping to strengthen intelligence-led policing, identify criminal hotspots and prevent offences before they occur.

The training, which ended on Thursday, October 15, 2026, brought together officers from various formations of the Command, alongside representatives of the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC), Homeland Security and vigilante groups, to enhance inter-agency collaboration and improve security operations across the state.

The Commissioner of Police, Abia State Command, CP Wilfred Olutokunbo Afolabi, said the programme was designed to move policing in Abia beyond reactive responses to a proactive system driven by credible intelligence, strategic deployment of personnel and timely intervention.

Afolabi explained that crime mapping helps security operatives identify crime hotspots, crime timing reveals patterns and periods when criminal activities are more likely to occur, while crime nipping involves taking timely preventive measures to disrupt criminal plans before they are executed.

He charged participants to apply the knowledge acquired in intelligence gathering, crime analysis and operational planning to improve crime detection, prevent criminal activities and enhance public safety.

The police commissioner also directed Divisional Police Officers (DPOs), Area Commanders and Tactical Team Commanders to ensure that crime maps in their respective areas of responsibility are regularly updated by trained personnel to facilitate effective operational planning, strategic deployment of security operatives and prompt responses to emerging threats.

The facilitators commended the Command for investing in professional training and adopting structured, intelligence-driven strategies to combat crime. They stressed that effective crime detection and the apprehension of offenders require systematic planning, technical expertise and the practical application of intelligence.

Participants, who demonstrated their understanding of the training through practical illustrations, expressed appreciation for the knowledge gained, while certificates were presented to them at the conclusion of the programme.

Afolabi appreciated the Abia State Governor, Dr Alex Chioma Otti, for his continued support for the Command’s security initiatives, noting that sustained cooperation between the government and security agencies remained essential to maintaining peace and protecting lives and property.

He further emphasised that all security operations must be conducted within the ambit of the law and in full respect of citizens’ fundamental rights.

According to him, the effectiveness of policing should not be measured solely by arrests made or cases recorded, but also by crimes prevented, lives protected and public confidence strengthened.

The Abia State Police Command reaffirmed its commitment to intelligence-led policing, stronger collaboration among security agencies and improved safety and security for residents across the state, in line with the vision of the Inspector-General of Police.
