Abia Soccer Fest Enters Second Phase, Asomugha Highlights Talent Hunt Initiative

The Abia Soccer Fest (ASF) has moved into its second phase following the successful completion of the draws, the Assistant Chairman of the Abia Sports Festival Committee, Capt. Eric Asomugha, has announced.

Speaking during the official event, Asomugha revealed that the maiden phase of the grassroots football competition, which ended last year, witnessed impressive participation across the state.

He disclosed that a total of 166 matches were played across the 17 Local Government Areas (LGAs), with active involvement from 184 wards.

According to him, no fewer than 3,312 players featured in the first phase of the tournament, culminating in the emergence of champions from each LGA after a series of competitive ward-level matches.

Asomugha reiterated that the core objective of the Abia Soccer Fest is to discover and develop young football talents at the grassroots level. He noted that the initiative serves as a critical platform for identifying promising players who might otherwise remain unnoticed.

Describing the programme as a deliberate effort to groom future stars, he stressed that early discovery remains key to building successful football careers.

The competition, he explained, is targeted at players between the ages of 18 and 23, with a structured plan not only to identify talents but also to provide them with the necessary training and exposure to pursue professional careers within Abia State, across Nigeria, and beyond.

He further disclosed that arrangements are underway to link outstanding players with opportunities in the broader football industry, including potential business and career pathways.
Reaffirming the vision behind the initiative, Asomugha said the organisers remain committed to empowering youths and delivering lasting value to the state through sports development.

He commended the Governor of Abia State, Dr. Alex Otti, for his support and commitment to youth and sports development, describing his leadership as instrumental to the success of the initiative.

The ASF Assistant Chairman also lauded the Commissioner for Sports and Youth Development, Sir Obilor Ananaba; the Commissioner for Local Government and Chieftaincy Affairs, Prince Uzor Nwachukwu; and the Permanent Secretary of the Ministry, Lady Oge Maduka, who also serves as Secretary of the festival, for their collaborative efforts in driving the programme.

He equally appreciated grassroots stakeholders for their contributions toward the smooth execution of the competition so far.

The Abia Soccer Fest is increasingly seen as a strategic initiative aimed at revitalising grassroots football in the state while creating sustainable pathways for young talents to excel both locally and internationally.
