ASEPA COMMENCES COMPULSORY DISPLAY OF WASTE BINS IN COMMERCIAL VEHICLES
DEFAULTERS TO PAY ₦50,000

As part of efforts to keep Abia State clean, the Abia State Environmental Protection Agency (ASEPA) has commenced the enforcement of the mandatory display of waste bins in commercial vehicles across the state.

The General Manager of ASEPA, Chief Ogbonnia Okereke, stated this in his office on March 31, 2026, during a meeting with managers of public and private motor parks in the state. He informed them that the agency would, from April 1, 2026, begin the compulsory use of waste bins in commercial vehicles and tricycles.

He further stated that defaulters would be fined ₦50,000 for commercial buses and other vehicles, while tricycle operators would pay ₦20,000.

The General Manager made it clear that the agency’s objective is not to generate revenue for the state government through fines, but to ensure compliance with environmental regulations.

According to him, the state government is committed to achieving a cleaner and more hygienic Abia State.
Chief Okereke urged park managers to create awareness in their respective parks to prevent drivers from violating the law.

One of the managers sought clarification on who would enforce the law the park managers or the agency. In response, the General Manager said that park managers should begin enforcement to create sufficient awareness among drivers, adding that his office would not entertain any appeals from defaulters.

He also stated that the waste bins would be sold at ₦2,000 each and must be green in colour. ASEPA remains the only authorized agency to produce and sell the bins, taking over this responsibility from the Ministry of Transport.

The Deputy General Manager of ASEPA, Umuahia Zone, Catechist Ambrose Jonah, and other stakeholders were present at the meeting.
