Deputy Governors of Abia and Akwa Ibom Unite to Ensure Peace and Road Project Completion

In a landmark show of inter-state cooperation, the Deputy Governors of Abia and Akwa Ibom States have intervened to restore calm between Akirika Obu in Ukwa East Local Government Area of Abia State and Ikot Udo in Ika Local Government Area of Akwa Ibom State, urging residents to embrace peace and allow an ongoing road construction project to continue without disruption.

At a peace meeting held in Akirika Obu, Abia State Deputy Governor Engr. Ikechukwu Emetu called on both communities to prioritize harmony over disputes, emphasizing that the meeting was not meant to address land ownership or boundary disagreements, which fall under the National Boundary Commission’s mandate.

“Our focus is ensuring that this road project is completed,” Engr. Emetu said. “Once the road is tarred, development and prosperity will follow. The communities must cooperate for the benefit of all.”

He confirmed that both state governments have approved construction from their respective sides, with the two sections set to meet at the disputed area, pending official demarcation. He also reminded residents of their longstanding cultural and social ties, urging them to maintain peaceful coexistence.

Deputy Governor Emetu commended security agencies for maintaining peace and warned that troublemakers attempting to disrupt harmony would face consequences, reiterating that both governments will not tolerate actions undermining development.

Earlier, Akwa Ibom Deputy Governor, Senator (Dr.) Akon Etim Eyakenyi, appealed to stakeholders to support the road project, noting that meaningful development cannot occur without reliable infrastructure. She praised the Governors of both states for their commitment to peace, progress, and people-oriented development.

Brigadier General Hassan M. Bello, Commander of the 14 Brigade of the Nigerian Army, Ohafia, explained that military presence in the area was strictly to provide security and facilitate peaceful dialogue. He emphasized that the army is not involved in boundary disputes and warned against any attempts to disrupt agreed resolutions.
