Former Abia Deputy Governor Ude Oko Chukwu Joins Labour Party in Landmark Political Shift

In a major political shake-up in Abia State, the immediate past Deputy Governor, Rt. Hon. Ude Oko Chukwu, has officially defected to the Labour Party (LP) along with his supporters and key political allies—signaling a significant realignment in the state’s political landscape.

The defection was formally announced during a well-attended reception at Etitiama Primary School in Nkporo, Ohafia LGA, where Governor Alex Otti welcomed Chukwu and assured all new entrants of full inclusion and equal opportunities within the party.

“This is a party that does not discriminate,” Governor Otti emphasized. “Whether you joined today or years ago, your rights and privileges are the same—including mine.”

Commending Chukwu’s move, Governor Otti noted that the former Deputy Governor not only acknowledged the current administration’s progress but had fully embraced its vision.

“He didn’t just give us a thumbs up—he has come in wholeheartedly to join the Labour Party,” the Governor stated. “I thank him sincerely.”

As part of the day’s announcements, Governor Otti revealed that the contract for the reconstruction of the Abiriba–Nkporo Road had been awarded. He assured residents of improved quality, pointing out that past work lacked a solid foundation.

“This time, we’re building with a proper stone base and a minimum of five to six centimeters of asphalt,” he said.

The Governor also disclosed plans to upgrade Etitiama Primary School to smart school status, in line with his administration’s broader push to improve education.

“Education is the greatest investment we can make in our children’s future,” he affirmed.

Speaking at the event, Rt. Hon. Ude Oko Chukwu declared that the People’s Democratic Party (PDP) in Abia State is effectively defunct following his departure.

“You have made a remarkable difference, Governor,” Chukwu said. “I’m here because I see your sincerity in delivering real change. From today, PDP in Abia has ceased to exist.”

He also formally transferred his political organization, the Abia Vision Rangers, to the Labour Party.

Labour Party’s Acting State Chairman, Sir Emmanuel Nwaeze Oti, credited Governor Otti’s performance for the surge in defections, stating that the LP is gaining momentum because it is delivering on its promises.

Notable among the new entrants were Chief Egesigh Eze Azu (former PDP Chairman, Ohafia LGA), Christie Emenike (former PDP State Woman Leader), and Princely Kingsley Ngunu (former Chairman, Arochukwu LGA). They praised the Governor’s developmental efforts, noting that for the first time, communities across Abia are seeing tangible governance.

“There is no vacancy in Abia Government House in 2027,” one of the defectors confidently declared, echoing widespread support for the current administration.

The event also featured the formal presentation of the Labour Party flag to Rt. Hon. Ude Oko Chukwu. Dignitaries in attendance included Deputy Governor Engr. Ikechukwu Emetu, the Secretary to the State Government, the Chief of Staff, Commissioners, and former SSG Dr. Eme Okoro.
