Late Elder Ezenwa Johnson Onumegbu Buried in Umuahia

The remains of late Elder Ezenwa Johnson Onumegbu, popularly known as “De Eze,” have been committed to mother earth at his country home in Umuigbe, Umumgbogho, Mbom Afarata, Ibeku, Umuahia, Abia State.

The funeral service was conducted by the Assembly of God Church, where family members, friends, associates, church members and sympathisers gathered to pay their last respects to the deceased.

Delivering the funeral sermon, the Senior Pastor of Assembly of God Oginigba Church 1, Port Harcourt, Rev. Ebenezer Iweriso, urged mourners to live their lives in accordance with the teachings of Jesus Christ, stressing that death is inevitable and that everyone would eventually face it.

Preaching on the theme, “No Mercy in Hell,” and drawing from Luke 16:19–31, the cleric used the biblical account of the rich man and Lazarus to emphasise the importance of making peace with God while alive.

According to him, “there is heaven and there is hell,” adding that people should seek God’s mercy while they are still alive because there would be no opportunity to change their eternal destination after death.

Rev. Iweriso said the death of Elder Onumegbu was a reminder that “death is turn by turn,” urging the living to embrace Christ, shun sin and live godly lives.

He also cautioned youths against cultism and urged those involved in occult practices to abandon them and embrace Christianity. He stressed that neither wealth nor earthly possessions could guarantee eternal life.

The pastor further described the late Onumegbu as a man who, despite having opportunities to engage in mysticism and occultism, chose to remain faithful to God.

He said the deceased’s commitment to his Christian faith was reflected in his biography, noting that one of the principles he lived by was that “anything God cannot do should be left undone.”

Earlier, while reading the biography of the deceased, his first daughter, Miss Eze Adannaya, described her father as a resilient, hardworking and God-fearing man whose life was marked by perseverance and service to his family

Late Elder Onumegbu was born on August 15, 1950, to Late Mr. Johnson Onumegbu Otimkpu and Late Mrs. Mercy Nlewemuwa Onumegbu Otimkpu of Umuigbe, Umumgbogho, Mbom Afarata, Ibeku, Umuahia.

Born into a polygamous family during a period of hardship, he faced considerable challenges from childhood. Following the death of his father, he returned to his ancestral home and took responsibility for his widowed mother, aunt and her children.

According to the biography, he engaged in fishing, trapping crabs and snails, farming and other forms of manual labour to support his family. He was also said to have been a pioneer member of the Young Farmers Club of Nigeria, Umuahia Chapter.

Although his formal education ended at Standard Six, his daughter said he continued to acquire practical knowledge through experience, discipline and continuous learning, earning the respect of people who admired his wisdom and sound judgment.

The funeral ended with prayers for the family and exhortations to the mourners to emulate the deceased’s faith, diligence and commitment to his family and community.
