Abia Govt Announces June Environmental Sanitation Exercise, Restricts Movement.

The Abia State Government has announced that the monthly environmental sanitation exercise for June will hold on Saturday, June 27, 2026, from 7:00 a.m. to 10:00 a.m., with movement of persons and vehicles restricted during the exercise.

In a statement issued by the Public Relations Officer of the Ministry of Environment, Mrs. Obioma Chidinma Success, on behalf of the Commissioner for Environment, Mr. Philemon Asonye Ogbonna, residents were urged to actively participate in the sanitation exercise by cleaning their surroundings and observing environmental hygiene practices.

The statement explained that only individuals on essential duties would be exempted from the movement restriction and must present valid identification or other authentic authorization when required by security personnel.

The government called on Mayors of the Local Government Areas, traditional rulers, town union leaders, religious leaders, youth and women groups to mobilize and sensitize residents on the importance of the exercise and ensure their active participation.

It further directed that all markets, motor parks, private and public transport companies, as well as business premises across the state, should remain closed on Friday, June 26, 2026, between 7:00 a.m. and 9:00 a.m. to undertake their own clean-up activities.

Security agencies, including the Nigeria Police Force, the Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC), and the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC), were instructed to assemble at their designated points for deployment and enforcement duties.

Residents were also advised to remain indoors during the sanitation period, clean their immediate environment, and wear nose masks while participating in the exercise.

The Ministry warned that violators of the sanitation order would be arrested and prosecuted in accordance with the provisions of the Abia State Basic Environmental Law.

The government reiterated its commitment to maintaining a clean and healthy environment and urged residents to support efforts aimed at promoting environmental sustainability across the state.
