Abia Commissioner Highlights Benefits of Clean Cooking Plan.

The Commissioner for the Ministry of Environment, Mr. Philemon Asọnye Ogbonna, has emphasized the numerous benefits of the Clean Cooking Plan project, describing it as cost-effective, durable and environmentally friendly.

Mr. Ogbonna spoke to journalists at Orie Ụgba Market, Umuahia, on Friday, January 24, 2026, after a publicity and sensitization exercise, following a similar engagement held a day earlier at Agụiyi Ironsi Layout.

According to the Commissioner, the Clean Cooking Plan introduces safer and more efficient cooking methods that do not harm the environment or worsen climate conditions. He noted that beyond protecting the environment, the initiative would also boost the economy of Abia State.

“The Clean Cooking Plan introduces Abians to better cooking practices without worsening the environment, most importantly the climate.

This initiative also improves the economy of Abia State. The scheme is a partnership between the Abia State Government and the International Center for Energy, Environment and Development,” he said.

Mr. Ogbonna lauded Governor Dr. Chiọma Otti for positioning Abia as a pace-setter in development, noting that the Clean Cooking Plan is unprecedented in the South-East region of the country.

Explaining the choice of Orie Ụgba Market as the venue for the exercise, the Commissioner said the aim was to sensitize women on safer, more durable and affordable cooking options.
“We have carried out a rally and are ending it here at Orie Ụgba Market, one of the most popular markets in Abia State.

We are here to sensitize women and show them samples of less expensive cooking materials under the Clean Cooking Plan, which will replace more expensive and environmentally harmful options such as gas cylinders, kerosene stoves and firewood,” he stated.

Speaking further on the benefits of the project, Mr. Ogbonna explained that it would help sustain a healthier environment for present and future generations, stressing the importance of preserving the environment for longevity.
He also noted that the new cooking utensils would help reduce mortality and health challenges associated with traditional cooking methods such as gas and kerosene.

In addition, the Commissioner disclosed that manufacturers of the clean cooking utensils would be based in Abia State, a move expected to ensure steady supply, create jobs and reduce unemployment among Abians and Nigerians at large.

Recalling Governor Otti’s pledge to attract investors and strengthen the state’s economy, Mr. Ogbonna said the Clean Cooking Plan aligns with the vision of the current administration.

Some beneficiaries and observers expressed optimism about the initiative. Okoafọ Patricia, who hails from Imo State, said the project demonstrated the Governor’s concern for women, noting that safer cooking options would help reduce women’s mortality.

Similarly, Joy Monday commended the Governor for addressing long-standing challenges in the state, stating that while no government can meet all expectations, the current administration has made significant efforts toward improving the welfare of Abians.
