Abia CP Afolabi Orders Officers to Adopt Intelligence-Led, Community Policing

The new Commissioner of Police in Abia State, CP Wilfred Olutokunbo Afolabi, has directed officers and commanders in the state to prioritise accountability, professionalism, intelligence-led policing and stronger community partnerships in the fight against crime.

Afolabi gave the directive on Tuesday, August 11, 2026, during his maiden briefing with Area Commanders, Divisional Police Officers (DPOs), heads of departments and commanders of the Violent Crime Response Unit (VCRU) at the Abia State Police Command.

The Commissioner said his administration would focus on protecting the lives and property of residents while ensuring that police officers discharge their constitutional responsibilities with integrity and professionalism.

He said he had assumed duty in Abia with the objective of implementing the strategic re-engineering agenda of the Inspector-General of Police, adding that the IGP’s vision would serve as the operational roadmap for the command.

Afolabi warned officers against extortion, corruption and other acts capable of tarnishing the image of the police, stressing that such conduct would not be tolerated under his leadership.
According to him, intelligence-led policing would remain the cornerstone of the command’s operational strategy.

He therefore called for sustained training and retraining of personnel in intelligence gathering, investigation, crime mapping, crime prevention and understanding the crime geography of Abia State.

He also identified human rights, electoral laws and emotional intelligence as areas requiring continuous professional development for officers.

The CP further urged his officers to strengthen cooperation with community leaders, residents, stakeholders and other security agencies, describing such collaboration as essential to effective crime prevention and the restoration of public confidence in the police.

He cautioned officers against equating civility with weakness, directing them to remain firm, disciplined and courageous while carrying out their duties within the law.

On traffic management, Afolabi ordered strict enforcement of traffic regulations across the state. He directed traffic officers to take the lead, in collaboration with relevant agencies, in ensuring compliance with traffic laws and maintaining the free flow of traffic.

The Commissioner commended the Abia State Government for its efforts toward development and security, while pledging continued collaboration between the police and sister security agencies in the state.

Afolabi assured residents that Abia State would not become a safe haven for criminals, promising intensified intelligence-driven and professional policing to combat crime and improve public safety.
