Afolabi Assumes Duty as 35th Abia Commissioner of Police

CP Wilfred Olutokunbo Afolabi has assumed duty as the 35th Commissioner of Police of the Abia State Command, succeeding AIG Danladi Isa, who has been promoted and redeployed to the Force Criminal Investigation Department (FCID) Annex, Kaduna.

A statement signed by the Police Public Relations Officer of the command, DSP Maureen Chioma Chinaka, on Monday said Afolabi assumed office on August 10, 2026, following his posting to the state by the Nigeria Police Force.

The new commissioner is a seasoned police officer with more than three decades of experience in policing, having enlisted in the Nigeria Police Force as a Cadet Assistant Superintendent of Police on May 18, 1992.

Before his posting to Abia, Afolabi served as Commissioner of Police, Administration, Training and Development at the Force Headquarters, Abuja.

He had also served as Commissioner of Police in Ondo State, where he coordinated administrative and operational activities, strengthened intelligence gathering and investigation, and promoted community policing initiatives.
His policing career has also taken him to several commands and specialised assignments across the country.

He previously served as Commissioner of Police, Force Equitation Officer, Mounted Troop, at the Force Headquarters, Abuja, and held various positions as Deputy Commissioner of Police in Delta, Katsina and Bayelsa states.

At the rank of Assistant Commissioner of Police, Afolabi served in different capacities in Anambra, Imo and Abuja, while also working as a Divisional Police Officer in several divisions within Abuja and as a directing staff member at the Police Staff College, Jos.
The new Abia police commissioner also has significant international peacekeeping experience.

He served as the Pioneer Sector Commander of Sector 2, Nyala, and Pioneer Regional Commander of Southern Darfur under the African Union Mission in Sudan between 2004 and 2005.

He also served as Nigeria Contingent Commander and Special Response Unit Officer under the Human Rights Section of the United Nations Mission in Bosnia and Herzegovina from 2001 to 2002, where he contributed to police reforms, system analysis and training of local police personnel.

Afolabi holds a Bachelor of Science degree in Botany from the University of Ilorin, as well as postgraduate and master’s degrees in Peace and Security Studies from the University of Port Harcourt. He has also attended several strategic and tactical policing courses in Nigeria and abroad.

The command said the new commissioner is regarded as a disciplined, strategic and result-oriented officer whose career reflects a commitment to public safety, professional excellence and international policing standards.

The Abia State Police Command called on stakeholders and members of the public to cooperate with Afolabi as he begins his tenure, saying their support would be crucial to his efforts to strengthen security and protect lives and property in the state
