Abia Governor Commissions Key Infrastructure in Ukwa West

Governor of Abia State, Dr Alex Otti, has commissioned three major projects at the headquarters of Ukwa West Local Government Area, reaffirming his administration’s commitment to strengthening governance at the grassroots.

The projects a new Works and Lands Building, a remodeled Legislative Complex, and the Asa Multipurpose Hall were unveiled on Tuesday as part of efforts to rebuild public institutions and promote people-oriented development across the state.

Speaking through his deputy, Engr. Ikechukwu Emetu, the governor said the projects represent more than infrastructural expansion, describing them as deliberate interventions aimed at deepening democracy, enhancing accountability, and bringing government closer to the people.

Otti explained that the Works and Lands Building would boost planning, supervision, and maintenance of infrastructure within the council, thereby ensuring coordinated and sustainable development. He added that the remodeled Legislative Complex would provide a more conducive environment for effective lawmaking, improve transparency, and strengthen representation at the local level.

The governor further noted that the Asa Multipurpose Hall would serve as a centre for community engagement, youth empowerment programmes, cultural activities, and policy dialogues, fostering unity and active civic participation among residents.

Commending the Executive Mayor of Ukwa West, Pst. Dike Nwankwo, Otti described his leadership as purposeful and people-driven, stressing that sustainable transformation must begin at the grassroots.
He assured residents that his administration remains focused on prudent resource management, institutional reforms, and infrastructure projects that directly improve the quality of life for citizens.

The governor urged the community to take ownership of the facilities by safeguarding and using them responsibly, before formally declaring the projects open for public use.

In his remarks, the Mayor of Ukwa West LGA, Pst. Dike Nwankwo, disclosed that his administration had completed nearly 20 projects within 15 months in office, with several others ongoing. He attributed the achievements to the support and enabling environment provided by the state government.

Nwankwo stated that the newly commissioned facilities would provide office accommodation for more than 25 Works Department staff, strengthen legislative operations, and offer a befitting venue for meetings and community programmes. He described the projects as practical steps toward improving service delivery and restoring confidence in local governance.

In separate remarks, the member representing Ukwa West State Constituency, Hon. Godwin Adiele; the Commissioner for Environment, Hon. Philemon Ogbonna; and the Commissioner for Justice and Attorney General, Hon. Ikechukwu Uwanna, applauded the council leadership for delivering visible and impactful development.

They observed that Ukwa West is among the local government areas benefiting from the current administration’s policies and reaffirmed the government’s resolve to extend more dividends of democracy across Abia.

The officials also urged eligible residents to obtain their Permanent Voter Cards (PVCs), emphasizing that active participation in the electoral process is vital to sustaining good governance.
