TO WAGE WAR AGAINST MALARIA USING TREATED MOSQUITO NETS
SET TO REFACE FIRST BANK RAIL WAY AXIS OF UMUAHIA

Abía State government said all is set for the distribution of mosquito insecticide treated nets round the 17 LGA of the state.

The state Commissioner for Information Prince Okey kanu stated this while briefing the press on Monday the 7th of August 2026 at government house Umuahia on the far reaching decisions reached at the week’s Executive Council meeting headed by the state governor Dr Alex Óttï.

The Commissioner said about three million and thirty thousand nets worth over #1, billion Naira is to be distributed . He noted that this is in continuation of the war against malaria in the state and this he said is being done in collaboration with the National Malaria elimination Program and both bodies would ln this month of September , embark on a state wide campaign for the distribution of the nets noting that the state since 2010 have not done any distribution of mosquito nets in the state.

Prince Okey kanu announced that the community supported registration of the Health Insurance Scheme have continued to gain momentum in the state, especially with the proposed launch of the program for Abriba community which is coming up on the 16th of September 2026 and about 1000Sbriba sons and daughters are expected to be enrolled for the scheme on the above date courtesy of Abriba Improvement Union . Each enrollee is to pays #18,000. So the program will generate about #18 million Naira on the above date .

The commissioner disclosed that the portal for the recruitment of more Medical personnels is still open .
He announced that the state is making good progress in her developmental efforts especially in the area of Health, Education, Infrastructural upgrading and governance in general. He said this became evident in 2026 Budgit assessment report which he said was in tandem with the Philips consulting State performance Index which also identified Abía State as one of the fastest improving State in Nigeria.
The. Budgit report ranked Abía 2nd in revenue growth, 3rd in internally generated revenue , first in total expenditure growth and first in Capital expenditure growth.

The Commissioner hinted that
as part of efforts to improve on the state’s transport ecosystem , the State Government will soon commence the construction of a 200-metre road extension that stretches from Bende road junction by Umuwaya and the Post office Tower through the Railway crossing to the First Bank and Ibiam road.

The Commissioner said the state government has also commenced the irenovation and retrofitting of one of the existing structures within the railway station to enable the relocation of the present police post.

He said the state government would equally reconstruct the abandoned road linking First Bank to the Keystone and FCMB banks.

Prince Kanu again disclosed that the Emede Ibeku Flood Control Program had recorded substantial progress, with site clearing completed, and drainage excavation and construction about 80 percent completed.

The Commissioner announced that some structurally defective buildings within Umuahia capital city have been identified by the Umuahia Capital Development Authority (UCDA) and had been sealed as a precautionary measure against possible fatalities.

The Commissioner said the Abia Green Shuttle Bus Service have continued to witness strong patronage, and disclosed that the service conveyed 196,950 passengers during the free fare period between December 2025 and February 2026, while 303,834 passengers used the service between March and the end of August 2026 following the commercialization of its service
Prince Kanu said the total number of passengers conveyed by the scheme since it was launched had reached 560,784, describing the figure as an indication of growing public acceptance of the service.
