Abia State Government Announces August Monthly Sanitation Exercise

The Abia State Government, through the Ministry of Environment, has announced that the Monthly Environmental Sanitation Exercise for the month of August will take place on Saturday, August 30, 2025, from 7:00 a.m. to 10:00 a.m. across the state.

In an official statement authorized by the Honourable Commissioner for Environment, Mr. Philemon Asonye Ogbonna, members of the public are reminded that movement of persons and vehicles will be strictly restricted during the three-hour period, except for those on essential duties. Such individuals must present valid identification or official authorization upon request.

Local Government Chairmen (Mayors), traditional rulers, town union leaders, religious leaders, youth groups, and women organizations are enjoined to take active roles in mobilizing and sensitizing their communities to participate fully in the exercise.

In preparation, all markets, motor parks, transport operators (public and private), and business premises are directed to close between 7:00 a.m. and 9:00 a.m. on Friday, August 29, 2025, to carry out internal clean-up operations.

Refuse disposal trucks will be available on Saturday to evacuate collected waste, as has been the usual practice.

Personnel from the Nigeria Police Force, Federal Road Safety Corps, and the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps are to report at their designated take-off points for deployment.

The ministry further urges residents to stay at home during the exercise, clean their surroundings diligently, and wear face masks while participating.

Members of the public are advised to comply, as defaulters will be arrested and prosecuted in accordance with the Abia State Basic Environmental Law.
