Abia State Government Urges Residents to Utilize Nenu Specialist Hospital

The Abia State Government has urged residents of Obingwa and neighboring communities to take full advantage of the Nenu Specialist Hospital, an annex of the Abia State University Teaching Hospital (ABSUTH), located in Nenu, Obingwa Local Government Area.

This appeal was made by the State Commissioner for Health, Prof. Ogbonnaya Uche, who was represented by the Chief Medical Director of ABSUTH, Prof. Uzoma Nduka, during an official tour of the facility.

According to the Commissioner, the hospital has grown significantly beyond its original scope since the inception of the partnership between ABSUTH and the Nenu community, formalized through a Memorandum of Understanding. He commended the community’s ongoing support and cooperation, noting that ABSUTH has successfully secured all necessary accreditations since the partnership began. He described the collaboration as highly effective and one that is now firmly established.

Highlighting the hospital’s advanced equipment—including ECG machines, a fully equipped theatre, labor ward, and ultrasound facilities—Prof. Uche emphasized that such infrastructure is rare in rural healthcare settings. He encouraged residents of Nenu and surrounding areas to take full advantage of the services provided, stressing that such a well-equipped facility should not go underutilized.

Speaking during the tour, the Mayor of Obingwa LGA, Hon. Maxwell Nwadike, praised the significant improvements made since his last visit, calling the transformation remarkable. He applauded the entire community for their efforts, with special recognition given to Dr. Chris Akomas for his instrumental role in the development. He noted that such a facility is rarely seen in local government areas and expressed optimism that the hospital will soon attract medical tourism to the region. Hon. Nwadike described Dr. Akomas—currently the National Chairman of the Forum of Former Deputy Governors of Nigeria—as an “Iroko tree” whose continued presence is vital to the community’s growth.

In his remarks, Dr. Chris Akomas expressed gratitude to God and to the people of Nenu for their collective support. He stated that the vision for the hospital is becoming clearer, with a fully functional automated laboratory and a well-stocked pharmacy now operational. He described the progress as outstanding and revealed that more advanced equipment, including an MRI machine, is expected to be installed soon.

Dr. Akomas emphasized that from the outset, the goal was to build not just a health center but a fully-fledged general hospital, and invited the public to access the high-quality medical services now available at Nenu Specialist Hospital.
