INMATES OF CORRECTIONAL CENTRES IN ABÍA STATE SIT FOR FIRST SCHOOL LEAVING CERTIFICATE EXAMINATION

In her bid to give educational opportunity to all strata of the society in Abía, the state government have through her Agency for Mass Literacy, Adult and Non Formal Education , made it possible for 34 images of correctional centers in the state to sit for 2026 first school leaving certificate examination in Umuahia the Abía State Capital.

This news was brokered by the state Commissioner for Information Prince Okey Kanu while briefing the press on Tuesday the 28th day of July 2026 at the government house Umuahia on the far reaching decisions made by the state’s Executive Council meeting headed by the state governor Dr. Alex Chioma Óttï.

The Commissioner said the Agency
successfully facilitated the participation of adult learners in the 2026 First School Leaving Certificate assessment test, emphasising that the initiative underscores government’s determination to ensure that education gets to every citizen in the state .

Prince kanu revealed that the Governor, Dr. Alex Otti is set to sign the Abia State Climate Change Policy Document . This policy is expected to reposition the state for global climate change financing for sustainable environmental management.
He explained that the policy would address major environmental challenges confronting the state.

“The implementation of this policy will help reduce climate-related challenges such as flooding, erosion, heat waves, health risks and food insecurity, while freeing up resources currently spent on ecological interventions and ensuring environmental sustainability,” Prince Kanu stated.

He also announced that the Governor has directed the immediate deployment of intervention and mitigation measures to the Amamba-
Uzuakoli flood and erosion site in Bende Local Government Area and the Ipupe-Ubakala flood site in Umuahia South Local Government Area.

The governor he said, has directed the Honourable Commissioner for Environment to urgently deploy intervention and mitigation measures to recover lost land and protect lives and property in the affected communities .

Prince Kanu further highlighted the Ministry of Environment’s environmental sanitation achievements across the state. He noted that
during the period under review, 103 communities were visited for environmental sensitisation and sanitary inspections. Over 9,000 premises were inspected, 37,500 abatement notices were served for environmental health violations, while 2,500 premises achieved compliance after follow-up inspections.

Prince Kanu also announced that the Ministry of Education, in collaboration with the National Mathematical Centre, Abuja, successfully organised the maiden edition of the 2026 Abia State Mathematics Kings and Queens Competition, which attracted over 600 pupils and students from public and private schools across the state.

“This competition is designed to encourage our children to develop a positive attitude towards Mathematics while rewarding excellence and inspiring healthy academic competitions”
he stated.

The information boss further disclosed that the state would host a Security Summit and would actively participate in commemorating the 60th memorial anniversary of the first Nigeria’s military Head of State Major Gen. JTU Aguiyi who is from Abía State.
