Abia Govt Reaffirms Commitment to Strengthening Primary Healthcare

The Abia State Government has reiterated its commitment to sustaining support for the Abia State Primary Health Care Development Agency (ABSPHCDA) to ensure the delivery of quality and accessible healthcare services across the state.

The Deputy Governor of Abia State, Engr. Ikechukwu Emetu, who is also the Chairman of the State Task Force on Primary Health Care, made this known during the 4th Quarter 2025 State Task Force Meeting held in his office.

Engr. Emetu commended the Agency for emerging as the best-performing Primary Health Care Development Agency in the South East zone, describing the achievement as a reflection of the present administration’s commitment to strengthening the health sector.

He further reaffirmed the state government’s decision to abolish all forms of Traditional Birth Practices, urging pregnant women to seek proper antenatal and delivery services in government-approved health facilities to reduce maternal and infant mortality.

In his remarks, the Executive Secretary of Abia State Primary Health Care Development Agency (ABSPHCDA), Dr. Kalu Ulu Kalu, attributed the agency’s achievements to the proactive leadership and support of Governor Alex Otti’s administration. He appealed for the prompt release of funds, particularly during outreach programmes, to enable the agency expand its reach and provide healthcare services to more communities across the state.

Representatives of development partners, including the World Health Organisation (WHO), UNICEF and other collaborating agencies, commended the Abia State Government for its notable achievements in the health sector.

They called for the deployment of adequately trained medical personnel to ensure effective utilisation of the medical equipment provided in primary healthcare centres across the state.

The meeting attracted key stakeholders in the state’s primary healthcare system and development partners, who deliberated on strategies to further strengthen primary healthcare delivery in Abia State.
