AIG Zone 9 Visits Abia Police Command, Tasks Officers on Professionalism, Community Policing

The Assistant Inspector-General of Police, Zone 9 Headquarters, Umuahia, Nwonyi P. Emeka, has charged officers and men of the Abia State Police Command to embrace professionalism, discipline, intelligence-led policing and stronger community partnerships in the fight against crime.

Emeka, whose Zone covers Abia, Imo and Ebonyi States, gave the charge on September 10, 2026, when he paid a working visit to the Abia State Police Command as part of his tour of Police Commands under the Zone.

The AIG was received by the Commissioner of Police, Abia State Command, CP Wilfred Olutokunbo Afolabi, alongside officers of the Command and stakeholders, including representatives of traditional rulers, the Police Community Relations Committee (PCRC), women and youth groups, traders’ associations and other community stakeholders.

Speaking during the visit, CP Afolabi highlighted the Command’s efforts to deepen community partnerships, improve intelligence gathering and enhance police visibility across the state.

He said the Command had continued to engage communities and stakeholders to identify and address their peculiar security challenges, while reaffirming its commitment to proactive policing through continuous training and retraining of personnel.

The CP expressed appreciation to the AIG for his professional guidance and experience, assuring that the Command would continue to work in line with the vision of the Inspector-General of Police to improve operational effectiveness.

In his address, AIG Emeka said the visit was aimed at strengthening the collective resolve of the Police Command to effectively deliver on its mandate, rather than being merely ceremonial.

He urged officers to remain professional, disciplined, responsive and courageous, stressing the need for intelligence-led, technology-supported and community-oriented policing.

The AIG also charged Area Commanders and Divisional Police Officers to build stronger relationships with their host communities, encourage timely information sharing and uphold respect for the law.

He warned officers against corruption, abuse of authority and other acts capable of undermining public confidence in the Nigeria Police Force.

The visit ended with an interactive session involving officers and stakeholders, where community security concerns and ways of strengthening collaboration between the Police and the public were discussed.

Emeka assured stakeholders of continued efforts to strengthen policing capacity within Zone 9, while urging members of the public to provide credible information to assist the Police in preventing and detecting crime.
