Abia Police, Red Cross Strengthen Partnership on Emergency Response, Community Safety

The Abia State Police Command has strengthened its partnership with the Nigerian Red Cross Society, Abia State Branch, with a renewed commitment to improving humanitarian support, emergency response and community safety across the state.

The Commissioner of Police, Abia State Command, CP Wilfred Olutokunbo Afolabi, psc+, mnips, JP, made this commitment on August 2, 2026, when he paid a courtesy visit to the Nigerian Red Cross Society, Abia State Branch, as part of his ongoing working visits across the Command.

The Commissioner was received by the Branch Secretary, Comr. Nzubechi Akubuako, who represented the Branch Chairman, who was unavoidably absent.
Speaking during the visit, CP Afolabi said the engagement was aimed at strengthening inter-agency collaboration between the Police and the Red Cross, particularly in the areas of humanitarian assistance, emergency response and community safety.

He noted that both organisations have a shared responsibility to protect and preserve lives, especially during crises, disasters and other public emergencies, stressing the importance of closer cooperation in responding effectively to such situations.

In response, the Red Cross team expressed appreciation to the Commissioner for the visit and assured the Police Command of its readiness to deepen collaboration.
The organisation also offered to provide first aid and emergency response training for police personnel to enhance their capacity to respond to emergencies and provide immediate assistance when required.

The Red Cross team, however, requested improved security coverage around its office premises, citing the need for enhanced protection of its personnel and facilities.

Responding to the request, CP Afolabi appreciated the organisation for its commitment to partnership and advised its officials to formally communicate the request for enhanced security coverage to the Command through an official letter.

He also encouraged the Red Cross to maintain regular communication with the Ubakala Divisional Police Headquarters, which has jurisdiction over the area, to facilitate prompt response to security concerns.

The visit underscored the Abia State Police Command’s commitment to building stronger relationships with critical stakeholders and humanitarian organisations as part of efforts to enhance public safety, emergency preparedness and effective service delivery in the state.
