Abia Rededicated to God at 2026 New Year Thanksgiving Service

Abia State Governor, Dr. Alex Otti, has reiterated his administration’s commitment to godly leadership and people-centred governance, as the state was formally rededicated to God at the 2026 New Year Thanksgiving Service organised by the Christian Association of Nigeria (CAN), Abia State Chapter.
The interdenominational service, held on Sunday at the Methodist Church Nigeria, Wesley Cathedral, Umuahia, marked the spiritual beginning of the year and drew government officials, church leaders and worshippers from across the state.

Represented by his Deputy, Engr. Ikechukwu Emetu, Governor Otti said his administration recognises the vital role of divine guidance in governance. He commended CAN for its sustained prayers and collaboration with the government, describing the Christian body as a dependable partner in the drive for a prosperous, inclusive and morally upright Abia State.

According to him, improved service delivery and visible infrastructural development across the state are evidence of the impact of sustained prayers, further strengthening the church’s resolve to continue interceding for the government.

The Governor called on CAN to continue praying for the success of his administration and the progress of the state, assuring that the welfare of Abians would remain a top priority. He also urged Christians to guard against spiritual complacency, encouraging deeper commitment to faith, active engagement with national issues, and participation in civic duties, including the ongoing voter registration exercise.

In his address, the Abia State CAN Chairman, Rev. Ojo Ojo Uduma, expressed gratitude to Governor Otti for his support and openness to faith-based engagement. He attributed what he described as the administration’s commendable performance to the church’s obedience to its biblical responsibility of praying for those in authority.

The service featured a sermon by the Archbishop of the Methodist Church Nigeria, Umuahia Diocese, His Grace, Most Rev. Chibuzo Opoko, delivered by the Right Rev. Ikechukwu Chimezie. The Archbishop thanked God for a “new dawn” in Abia State, marked by renewed hope and tangible development.

Highlights of the thanksgiving included Bible readings from Psalm 136:1–12, intercessory prayers for the Governor and the Abia State Government, prophetic declarations, and the formal rededication of the state to God.
