Governor Alex Otti of Abia State has inaugurated the first-ever Abia State Tertiary Institutions Sports Fiesta, reaffirming his administration’s commitment to promoting youth empowerment, unity, and sports development across the state.

The colourful flag-off ceremony, which featured the symbolic lighting of the sports torch, held in Nvosi, Isiala Ngwa South Local Government Area, on Monday.

Governor Otti, represented by his Deputy, Engr. Ikechukwu Emetu, described the event as a celebration of hope, unity, and the renewed spirit of Abia’s young people.

“Today, we gather not merely to light a torch of fire, but a torch of hope, passion, and youthful energy,” Otti said.

The governor announced that the fiesta will run from November 25 to 29, 2025, featuring 23 sporting events with participants drawn from 38 tertiary institutions both public and private across the state.

“As the torch travels through all 38 institutions, it will carry a message of unity, discipline, and excellence that defines the Abian spirit,” he said. “These games are more than competitions; they are platforms for talent discovery, moral redirection, and positive engagement. Through sports, our young people will find purpose, strength, and teamwork the very values needed for a progressive society.”

Governor Otti commended the Senior Special Assistant on Tertiary Institutions, Dr. Emeka Enyeazu, who chairs the organizing committee in collaboration with the Abia State Sports Council, for his commitment and effective coordination.

To encourage participation, the governor announced a ₦500,000 grant for any institution presenting athletes in five or more sporting events.

He urged students to embrace teamwork, discipline, and focus, adding that the fiesta would produce future champions capable of bringing glory to Abia State.

“Let every flare remind our students that greatness begins with discipline, and that within each of them lies the fire to transform our state and nation,” Otti declared. “May this flame burn brightly as it journeys through every institution, carrying our collective hope for unity, sportsmanship, and a vibrant youth culture.”

Commissioner for Tertiary Education, Prof. Uche Eme Uche, said the initiative was conceived by her ministry in partnership with the Ministry of Sports and Youth Development to promote unity, friendship, and healthy competition among students.

According to her, the fiesta reflects the inclusiveness of the Otti administration’s education policies, providing equal opportunities for students from both public and private institutions to showcase their talents.

“The fiesta will feature various games and competitions aimed at promoting laughter, friendship, and teamwork among Abia youths,” she said.

Also speaking, Commissioner for Sports and Youth Development, Mr. Nwobilor Ananaba, described the event as a cornerstone of the government’s grassroots sports development agenda.

He explained that the Otti administration’s sports vision begins at the foundation level primary and secondary school to identify and nurture young talents, with the extension to tertiary institutions deepening youth engagement and development across the state.

“This initiative strengthens our commitment to discovering and supporting young athletes who will represent Abia with pride,” Ananaba added.
