Tension Mounts in Bende as Ofuji’s Rumoured 2027 House of Reps Ambition Rattles Political Circles

Political tension is quietly building in the Bende Federal Constituency amid growing speculation that Dr. Chimaobi Desmond Anyaso, popularly known as Ofuji, may be eyeing a bid for the House of Representatives in 2027.

The seat is currently held by the Deputy Speaker of the House, Rt. Hon. Benjamin Okezie Kalu, whose political future appears to be pivoting toward higher office. Influential voices in the Ukwa la Ngwa political bloc have already called on Kalu to run for governor, or possibly senate, after his second term ends.

Sources within Bende indicate that a number of political heavyweights are urging Ofuji to enter the race—sparking palpable anxiety among existing political camps preparing to position their own candidates to succeed Kalu.

If Ofuji chooses to run, political analysts predict a dramatic showdown, particularly given the power dynamics and high-profile support surrounding the Deputy Speaker. Kalu, widely regarded as well-positioned at the federal level, is expected to transition smoothly into a senatorial or gubernatorial race, should he choose.

However, Ofuji may have a strategic advantage this time. Observers point to the zoning arrangement between Ikwuishi and Umunna—two major blocs within the constituency—suggesting that 2027 could be Umunna’s turn. As a prominent son of Umunna, Ofuji may benefit from this rotational sentiment.

Despite never holding public office, Ofuji is said to have maintained a strong grassroots political structure over the years, a factor that could prove decisive if he declares his candidacy.

In response to the mounting speculation, Gabriel Aguwa Paul, media aide to Ofuji, issued a measured statement:

“Ofuji has not made any public declarations about 2027. His current focus remains on community empowerment through impactful interventions and attracting developmental projects to Bende. He is also deeply involved in preparations for the 2025 edition of Irí Jị Ofuji, which he intends to make even more impactful than previous editions.”

Aguwa added that while Ofuji remains deeply connected to his community, any political ambition would be preceded by consultation, community engagement, and spiritual reflection:

“He is a man of deep faith who will not make such a significant move without divine guidance. For now, there is no official statement, and I urge the media to avoid unfounded speculation.”

As the clock ticks toward 2027, political observers in Abia State are watching closely. With the possibility of Ofuji entering the race, Bende could become the epicenter of one of the most closely watched electoral contests in the state’s recent history.
