Abia Govt Launches Maiden Tertiary Institutions Sports Fiesta in Grand Ceremony

The Abia State Government has formally inaugurated its first-ever University and Tertiary Institutions Sports Fiesta, with Governor Alex Otti declaring the week-long event open at the Umuahia Township Stadium.

Speaking through his Deputy, Engr. Ikechukwu Emetu, Governor Otti described the initiative as a landmark step in the state’s efforts to promote youth empowerment, sports development, and academic excellence. He said the Fiesta signals a new era for students across Abia’s tertiary institutions.

The Governor highlighted the significance of the ceremonial sports torch, which was first lit weeks earlier in Isiala Ngwa South and journeyed through 20 public and private institutions before arriving at the opening ceremony. He noted that the torch’s movement symbolised hope, unity, and renewed purpose for the state’s young people.

Reaffirming his administration’s commitment to nurturing talent across multiple sectors, Otti emphasized that education goes beyond classroom learning.

“Education is incomplete without platforms that build teamwork, discipline, creativity, and physical fitness,” he said. “Sports remain one of the strongest tools for shaping future champions and uniting communities.”

He added that the state’s investment in logistics, accommodation, and participation grants for the Fiesta reflects the administration’s belief that “every youth matters and every talent counts.” The Governor urged athletes to conduct themselves with fairness, integrity, and sportsmanship as they compete in 23 sporting events.

Commissioner for Tertiary Education, Prof. Uche Eme Uche, said the Fiesta, anchored on the theme “Compete, Unite, Conquer,” embodies the vision of a new Abia where young people uplift one another and pursue excellence collectively. She stressed that sports remain instrumental in building discipline, resilience, teamwork, and character.

Also speaking, the Commissioner for Sports and Youth Development, Sir Nwaobilor Ananaba, reiterated the government’s determination to harness the potential of Abia youths. He noted that the Governor’s Secondary School Unity Games had laid the foundation for grassroots talent discovery, with the new Fiesta extending that developmental pipeline to athletes in tertiary institutions.

Chairman of the Organising Committee, Dr. Emeka Enyiazu, described the event as more than a competition, calling it a movement for unity, leadership, and institutional development across public and private campuses. According to him, sports much like education serve as a universal language that fosters excellence.

In a vote of thanks, the Permanent Secretary of the Ministry of Tertiary Education, Barr. Chinyere Okeziem Nwoko, commended participating institutions and partners for their support. She said the Fiesta represents a strategic investment in students’ physical, mental, and social well-being, reinforcing the state government’s dedication to holistic education.

Nwoko added that the high level of enthusiasm displayed by participants demonstrates a promising future for sports and youth development in Abia State.
