ABIA STATE GOVERNOR KICKS OFF ACTIVITIES MARKING THIRD YEAR IN OFFICE, SAYS TRUST OF THE PEOPLE HAS BEEN UPHELD

David Maduako — Umuahia

The Abia State Governor, Dr. Alex Otti, has kick-started activities marking his third year in office with a media chat held on Friday, May 21, 2026, at the Michael Okpara Auditorium, Umuahia.

Presenting the scorecard of his administration over the past three years, the governor said his government has made significant impacts across various sectors in its efforts to rebuild and sustain the trust of the people in governance.

He noted that his administration has restored security in all local government areas previously threatened by insecurity, citing Umunneochi Local Government Area as a clear example.

According to him, traditional rulers from the area had visited him to express appreciation for restoring peace and security in the locality.

Governor Otti stated that his administration has ensured the prompt payment of salaries to civil servants and pensions to retirees on the 28th day of every month.

He also disclosed that the government had recovered several government landed properties allegedly acquired illegally by individuals and organisations and had gone further to secure them through fencing.

According to the governor, some of the affected occupants had challenged the action in court, while the government continues to handle the legal processes appropriately.

Governor Otti further revealed that his administration reduced the state’s debt profile from N91 billion in 2023 to less than N50 billion in 2025.

He added that Abia State, which was previously ranked 17th in development indices, is now ranked fourth in Nigeria.
Speaking on infrastructure, the governor said his administration completed 414 road projects covering 864.12 kilometres within three years, while 82 additional road projects spanning 212 kilometres are currently under construction.

He explained that all roads constructed by his administration are fitted with streetlights and standard drainage systems in line with the government’s zero-pothole policy.

According to him, the road projects have reduced transportation costs, boosted business activities, and created employment opportunities across the state.

Governor Otti also highlighted achievements recorded in the health sector, including the recruitment of 771 healthcare professionals and the renovation of 277 healthcare centres across the state.

He disclosed that 120 health centres are now fully equipped, staffed, and functional, while renovation works have been completed in some general hospitals, with work ongoing in others.

On education, the governor said Abia children are benefiting from free basic education introduced by his administration, which has significantly increased school enrollment across the state.

He disclosed that over 300,000 pupils have been enrolled, while about 5,394 teachers have been recruited.

He further stated that several higher institutions in the state that previously lost accreditation in some courses have regained their accreditation status.

Governor Otti reaffirmed that his administration remains focused on improving the welfare of the people and strengthening public confidence in governance.

He also congratulated all political parties in the state that have so far concluded their primaries and wished them success ahead of the 2027 general elections.
End.
