ABIA TAKES DELIVERY OF 20 NEW ELECTRIC BUSES WITH SURVELANCE MONITORS

The Abía State government say she has received 20 new Electric Buses bringing the total buses so far Imported to 40 electric buses.

This development was made known by the state governor Dr Alex Óttï while briefing the press on the journey so far in the state during the month of July edition of his Media Chat which took place in Michael Okpara Auditorium Umuahia.

Speaking further , the governor said the new buses have been installed with new Surveillance monitor systems to Monitor activities going on in the buses and those of the drivers . He stated that an airing driver and his Assistant who were caught in the act have been disciplined accordingly .

He said new routes are being mapped out for the buses to cover, noting that some of these routes include Umuahia to Owerri, Umuahia to Okigwe. Umuahia to Umudike among others .The governor made it clear that the state government would solely manage the buses at least for now .

The governor disclosed that work is seriously on going at the Aba Bus Terminal which he said would be completed soon . While the first phase of remodelling of Ekeoha market have been completed awaiting commissioning .

Governor Óttï stated that Abía State under his watch have been ranked the 3rd most improved state by the latest 2026 Phillips Consulting State Performance Index which was released recently.
Governor Alex Otti, attributed this huge success to his administration’s sustained investments in healthcare, education, infrastructure and governance. He noted that the latest ranking showed that the government’s reforms were beginning to make a noticeable impact on the lives of Abians.

According to the Governor between 2023 and 2024, the state was rated number 36,  and in 2025, we moved from 36 to number 10.
And with the current report, the state is now number 3, closely following Jigawa, which  came  second, and  Enugu which came  first.

Governor Otti revealed that Abia state toppled the charts in terms of maternal and infant mortality rate in the 2026 first quarter report released recently in Nigeria. He noted that the health sector has recorded one of the administration’s biggest successes, particularly in reducing maternal and infant mortality rate, while enrolment in Abia State Health Insurance Scheme have continued to grow.

He explained that 144 out of the state’s 200 Primary Healthcare Centres have been fully functionalised, while another 77 centres renovated through the World Bank intervention
have been equally completed, adding that about 30 more facilities are expected to be functionalized very soon .

The Governor also highlighted reforms in land administration, revealing that the state has issued 4,923 Certificates of Occupancy C of Os in the last three years, with close to 1,000 processed in this year alone.

He informed that the digital mapping of Abia has been completed in partnership with UN-Habitat, paving the way for a fully digitised land administration system that would eliminate fraudulent land transactions and make property documentations faster.

On education, Governor Otti said the government has continued to expand its Smart School initiative with the commissioning of 2 smart schools, out of 20, assuring that the remaining 18 would equally be completed and commissioned in no distance time.

He explained that, “the idea is to expose our children to modern technology from an early stage.

The Governor admitted that the rains have slowed down the pace of road construction but assured residents that work would remain ongoing on major projects sites across the state.
He expressed sympathy to residents affected by the recent floods, stating that government remains committed to investing in durable drainage infrastructure.

The state chief executive acknowledged growing concerns over rising rents in Aba and Umuahia metropolis, saying increased demand for accommodation have contributed to high cost of rentals . He however, assured that the government would soon flag off the construction of the Pocket Layout housing project in Umuahia, to help bridge the gap.

Governor Otti, who described the recent visit of the First Lady of Nigeria, Senator Oluremi Tinubu, as a major boost for the state’s creative economy announced that, the state has opened a bank account for the Akwete cloth production hub.

He further disclosed that the First Lady have authorised the release of the funds she pledged to support the Akwete women’s cloth production hub, adding that the state would announce the receipt of the funds once it is credited.

The Governor, commended residents for embracing environmental sanitation, stressed the need for it to become a habit while praising security agencies for maintaining peace and order in the state . He congratulated the state’s Commissioner of Police on his recent promotion to the rank of Assistant Inspector General of Police.
