Chikwendu Declares for Abia South Senate on Labour Party Platform.

Elder Comrade James Chibuzo Chikwendu, popularly known as Onye Nkem, has formally declared his intention to contest for the Abia South Senatorial seat under the platform of the Labour Party ahead of the 2027 general elections.

Chikwendu’s entrance into the race adds a new voice to the growing contest for the senatorial district and places him among the emerging aspirants seeking to represent the people of Abia South at the National Assembly.

An indigene of Ntigha Umuomei in Obingwa Local Government Area and widely known as a son of Aba, Chikwendu is regarded as a grassroots mobilizer with longstanding involvement in community development, political participation and human rights advocacy across Abia State.

Political observers say his identity as a “Nwa Aba” and his close ties with grassroots structures may enhance his appeal among voters in Aba and neighbouring communities as political activities gradually build toward the 2027 polls.

Professionally, Chikwendu is an administrator and real estate practitioner with years of experience in estate management, construction and project development. He serves as Principal Partner at Nwokorie and Company Estate Surveyors and Valuers and Managing Director of Jim Konsult Ltd. He is also a member of the Nigerian Institution of Estate Surveyors and Valuers.

Beyond his professional career, Chikwendu has earned recognition in civil society circles for his advocacy in defence of human rights and social justice.

He is the founder of the James Chikwendu Human Rights Foundation and also serves as Founder and National Coordinator of the Network for Advancement of Human Rights and Social Justice.

He currently holds the office of National Vice President of the Committee for the Defence of Human Rights, where he has remained vocal on issues of justice, equity and social reform.

In the political arena, Chikwendu was a foundation member of the All Progressives Congress and contested for the Obingwa West (Uhie) Constituency seat in the 2015 Nigerian general elections.

His political activities have also remained visible within the Labour Party. He participated actively in the party’s recent ward, local government and state congresses, as well as its national convention.

He also contested for the position of Deputy Chairman during the Labour Party state congress.

Chikwendu is equally the current President of the Eziama High School Aba Class of 88 Old Boys Association.

Analysts believe his blend of activism, professional background and grassroots political engagement has given him considerable understanding of the electoral landscape in Abia State.

Sources within the party indicate that his senatorial ambition will focus on youth empowerment, constituency development and accountable representation issues that have consistently featured in his public engagements.

With several aspirants expected to join the race across party lines, Chikwendu’s declaration under the Labour Party is expected to further intensify the contest for the Abia South Senatorial District as political stakeholders begin early calculations ahead of the 2027 elections.
