UCDA Debunks Demolition Notice Claims, Defends Isiama Afara Exercise

The attention of the Umuahia Capital Development Authority (UCDA) has been drawn to misinformation alleging that the agency failed to issue contravention notices before the demolition exercise carried out yesterday at Isiama Afara Ukwu Ibeku in Umuahia North Local Government Area.

In a statement issued by the General Manager of UCDA, Mr. Kingsley Agomoh, the agency described as false the widespread claims that owners of shanties and makeshift structures along the axis were not served notices before the exercise.

The statement explained that the agency issued first and second contravention notices to the owners of the affected shanties and makeshift structures on March 17, 2025, and April 17, 2026, respectively, before embarking on the demolition exercise.

The Umuahia Capital Development Authority stated that the exercise was carried out in line with its mandate and functions as provided in the Abia State Urban and Regional Planning Board and Town Planning Authorities Law, Cap 40, Volume 2, Laws of Abia State 2005, as amended.

The agency noted that the demolition exercise is not limited to Isiama Afara Ukwu Ibeku but will be extended across the state capital in line with the present administration’s determination to enhance the aesthetics of Umuahia and ensure orderly development.

According to the statement, the shanties and makeshift structures had become hideouts for criminals and drug peddlers, a situation the state government is determined to address.

The agency therefore advised residents of Umuahia to support the state government’s efforts to improve the aesthetics of the state capital by voluntarily removing all shanties, makeshift structures, and other illegal developments.
