Be the Change You Were Trained to Lead” – Gov. Otti Urges 1,000 Abia Youth Leaders

Abia State Governor, Dr. Alex Otti,has charged the 1,000 graduating participants of the Abia Leadership Academy to become role models, community change agents, and proud ambassadors of the State.

Speaking at the combined graduation ceremony of Cohorts 3 and 4, held at Government College Umuahia, Governor Otti challenged the young leaders to apply their knowledge by offering solutions to real-life problems and inspiring transformation wherever they go.

In his keynote address titled “Role Models and Pathfinders,” the Governor emphasized that true leadership is measured not by titles but by the lives transformed and ideas sparked.

“Your success will not be judged by personal achievements alone, but by the lives you change, the courage you inspire, and the values you uphold,” he said.

Governor Otti noted that the core philosophy behind the Academy is that leaders are not born but made—through mentorship, deliberate choices, and a commitment to excellence.

“This academy was set up to offer a 360-degree view of leadership,” he explained. “It provides clarity through mentors’ experiences, answers to real-life questions, and guidance for self-rediscovery.”

While acknowledging the State’s significant investment in their training, the Governor stressed that the real return lies in the impact the graduates would create.

“Our conviction is that 1,000 of you can start a movement that transforms the destiny of millions. Go out there and become leaders in your families, communities, and beyond,” he urged.

To further support the alumni, the Governor announced plans to create a digital leadership community—an online network to foster continued mentorship, global exposure, and advanced training opportunities. He tasked the Secretary to the State Government, Professor Kenneth Kalu, with spearheading the initiative.

“You won’t be left to wander. The government will follow your progress, offer guidance, and include you in future leadership activities,” Otti assured.

In his remarks, Prof. Kenneth Kalu, who also chairs the Leadership Academy Organizing Committee, praised Governor Otti’s vision. He said the programme has redefined the mindset, knowledge, and capacity of young Abians, preparing them for the challenges of tomorrow.

“The skills taught must not end with this graduation. Let them shape your daily lives and decisions,” Kalu advised the graduates.

Pastor Enoh Jerry-Eze, Chairman of the Civil Service Commission and member of the organizing committee, in her welcome address, hailed the Governor’s commitment to democratizing leadership development.

“This programme proves that leadership is not a privilege of a few, but a calling for all who dare to dream and serve,” she said.

She noted that the programme had equipped participants with essential values including integrity, empathy, creativity, discipline, service, and resilience—qualities she encouraged them to carry forward as they return to influence their schools, communities, and the wider society.

Several graduates testified to the life-changing nature of the programme, describing it as a journey that turned them into critical thinkers, disciplined individuals, and effective problem solvers.

They expressed gratitude to Governor Otti for initiating the Academy and committing resources to train future leaders.

In a show of continued support for education and infrastructure, Governor Otti donated 150 foldable chairs, 150 foldable tables, foams, and other training items to Government College Umuahia—the host venue of the leadership programme.

The event was graced by top government officials, including the Deputy Governor, Engr. Ikechukwu Emetu, and other dignitaries.
